Types of legislation you'll find:
Public Access
While the Americans with Disabilities Act protects the right to access for task-trained service dogs, states may have expanded access for service dogs in training. Some states even allow animals other than dogs and horses to work as service animals.
Health Codes
Service dogs are permitted to accompany their handlers into all areas open to the public with the exception of sterile environments, churches, and some parts of zoos. While handlers often know this, business owners may not. Health codes help teams gain access when someone is challenging whether a service dog is allowed into certain places, like a tattoo or piercing shop.
SDiT Requirements
The Americans with Disabilities Act does not allow access for service dogs in training (SDiTs), but the majority of states allow access to them through their own state laws. This access occasionally comes with a need for specific gear or trainer qualifications for access.
Penalties
Many states have individual penalties for service dog fraud, interfering with a service dog, and allowing other dogs to interfere with service dogs. You'll find the specifics of each penalty on your state's page.
